چکیده

The development of germanium Compton telescopes for nuclear γ-ray astrophysics (∼0.2-20 MeV) requires new event reconstruction techniques to accurately determine the initial direction and energy of photon events, as well as to consistently reject background events. This paper describes techniques for event reconstruction, accounting for realistic instrument/detector performance and uncertainties. An especially important technique is Compton Kinematic Discrimination, which allows proper interaction ordering and background rejection with high probabilities. The use of these techniques are crucial for the realistic evaluation of the performance and sensitivity of any germanium Compton telescope configuration.

High Resolution Celestial Imaging: An Algorithm and Dataset for VLBI Image Reconstruction

Recently, there has been an international effort to create an Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) capable of imaging a black hole’s event horizon for the first time. Imaging distant celestial sources, such as the event horizon of a black hole, with high resolving power (i.e. small angular resolution) requires telescopes with prohibitively large diameters due to the inverse relationship between angula...

Realistic arrival time distribution from an isotropic light source

The event reconstruction in high energy neutrino telescopes is based on the expression of the time delay distribution of the detected photons propagating to some distance from their emission point through a uniform and scattering medium. Considering a realistic detector with a finite time resolution, we derive an expression for the probability density function of the time delay of detected phot...

Low Noise Double - Sided Silicon Strip Detector for Multiple - Compton

A Semiconductor Multiple-Compton Telescope (SMCT) is being developed to explore the gammaray universe in an energy band 0.1–20 MeV, which is not well covered by the present or near-future gamma-ray telescopes. The key feature of the SMCT is the high energy resolution that is crucial for high angular resolution and high background rejection capability. We have developed prototype modules for a l...

Simulated Performance of a Germanium Compton Telescope

To build upon the goals of the upcoming INTEGRAL mission, the next generation soft γ-ray (0.2-20 MeV) observatory will require improved sensitivity to nuclear line emission while maintaining high spectral resolution. We present the simulated performance of a germanium Compton telescope (GCT) design, which will allow a factor of ten improvement in sensitivity over INTEGRAL/SPI. We also discuss a...

Effect of compensation for scattering angular uncertainty in analytical Compton camera reconstruction.

In Compton cameras, the measured scattering angle is associated with an uncertainty which becomes larger as the incident gamma-ray energy decreases. Since this uncertainty degrades the spatial resolution of reconstructed images, Hirasawa and Tomitani (2003 Phys. Med. Biol. 48 1009-26) previously revised their analytical reconstruction algorithm to compensate for it. As the new algorithm improve...
